DIY Painting Tips – White Knight Tile Paint
White Knight tile paint, now allows you to quickly and cheaply change the color and look of your tiles, whether it be in your bathroom, laundry or kitchen.
The process consists of 4 steps.
Step1. Thoroughly clean your tiles with the white knight tile and laminate cleaner. This is basically sugar soap, so you can save a few dollars by using sugar soap, but you may void your warranty if you have adhesion problems. Make sure that once the surface is clean that you wipe it down with clean water and let it dry thoroughly before proceeding to step 2.
Step2. Once the surface is completely dry, you are ready to apply the White Knight tile and laminate primer.
First stir the primer thoroughly. It needs to be warmer than 10 degrees Celsius and cooler than 30 degrees Celsius. Apply with a good quality brush or roller. It will be touch dry in about an hour and you can apply the top coat after 4 hours. If it is on the colder side then allow more drying time before applying the top coat.
Step3. Once the undercoat has dried, you are ready to apply the White Knight Tile Paint. As with the primer it will need to be stirred thoroughly and has the same temperature requirements. It is even more important to use a good quality brush or roller as this will affect your final finish. White Knight Tile Paint can be tinted in a large range of colors. The surface will be touch dry in 2 hours and you can apply your second coat after 6 hours. Remember to allow extra drying time if the temperature is cool.
Step4. Once your top coat is completely dried, you can recreate fresh new white grout lines with the grout pen. The pen also works great for refreshing existing white grout.
Note- give it a good week to cure completely before any harsh scrubbing. The product is not suitable for floor tiles or shower bases. If you would prefer a lower gloss level then you can use the laminate paint instead.
Oil Painting Materials and Purchasing Tips
To get started with the art of oil painting you are faced to buy the materials needed. Oil painting materials are quiet expensive and there are many varieties of materials to choose from which is little hard for the oil painting beginner. What we have here is a guide for you in purchasing your oil painting materials.
1. Choosing the right easel for your painting? You have to consider some few things like what is it made of the height. The most important thing to remember is to have an easel that is sturdy. Many easels can be bought in art shops but if you do not have a budget then you can make one for your own. There are tips on how to make an easel that is just right for you. Having a self made easel gives you an ease of not adjusting anything when using because you can make it to put the canvas where you wanted. Portable easels are mostly used if you wanted to paint outdoors or out of your working place.
2. Next are white bristle brushes. Get a variety of brushes and it is suggested to get animal hair brushes and not the synthetics brush. Animal hairbrush handles the pigment better and is more natural than synthetic hairbrush. Q-tips cotton are also better in oil painting because they can create very subtle stroke with it’s soften edges. Using white bristle brushes needs more practice though. It is recommended to use a shaving brush, cut it with a brush cutter.
3. Pads of wax coated paper or disposable palettes is also needed when oil painting. When you use only one, tear it off and its fine but it is suggested that you get to disposable palettes. One is for putting your colors down, while the other one is used for mixing colors only.
4. Different oils can be mixed with your pigments. Start with Cold Pressed Linseed oil but you can experiment later on. The latter oil mentioned earlier is extracted from trees and is general purpose oil. A palette knife is to be used when mixing the oil and resins into the pigments. Alkyd resin is needed to fasten the drying time of the pigments. If you are not familiar with alkyd buy a general purpose one until you know which one you want to use.
5. Other essential materials are paint thinner or mineral spirits. In using these substances make sure to get one that is not too smelly or strong because these are not that good to ones. Brush washer is also needed to put the paint thinner in and wash your brushes. Rags are preferred for messes and cleanups.
6. Canvas boards are good for oil painting practice. Prepare your canvas and buy it unprimed. There are pre-stretched canvases available in department stores or art shops though this comes with a price.
Painting Tips Priming
One of the most important rules of thumb in painting is, -always prime raw wood.-This is especially true for the exterior of your house.Primer penetrates the surface of the wood, both sealing the wood and providing an anchor upon which the finish paint will adhere.Without the anchoring effect of the primer, the finish coat will fail.It may take a few months, or even a few years, but eventually the wood will be exposed and unprotected.Weather and the elements will invariably damage untreated, exposed wood.Conversely, when the finish coat painted over the top of primed wood deteriorates, it powders and flakes; the primed wood that is exposed remains protected. Moreover, the durability of the finish coat greatly increases with the application of primer coat, as it blocks the interaction of wood borne and waterborne chemicals, such as tannin, calcium and salts, due to exposure to the elements.
Interior priming can also be valuable.Raw wood, such as trim and cabinets, also benefits from priming due to the anchoring effect.Raw drywall and fresh drywall texture also need priming. If you do not prime new drywall/texture, you will not produce the build or luster desired of paints with any kind of sheen.Flat paints will also suffer, due to the lack of hide that primers provide. As a rule, if what you are painting has never been painted, then you should prime it before painting it.
For exteriors, you may need to buy a stain blocking primer, depending on the condition of the wood.In addition, it is recommended that you prime any composite siding, such as Hardie Plank. For interiors, most products will work fine, unless you have water damage/stains, in which case you will need a stain blocking primer.
For small areas you can use a brush and or roller to apply the primer. For larger areas, you can use a brush and roller or you can use a Paint Spray Rig. If you choose to use the paint spray rig wait until you are prepped to start spraying, then spray prime the needed areas before you paint them.Note:Brushes leave brush marks and rollers leave orange peel.If your desire is to produce the smoothest finish possible, you may want to spray both the primer and finish.
I hope this tip was useful and helps you produce a beautiful and professional finish on your home.Remember, afresh coat of paintonthe exterior of your home adds a great deal to the curb appeal and value of your home.
Accent Wall Paint Colors-Wall Painting Tips to Easily Create a New Environment

The eye goes to color, and when color is placed around a room your eye moves from one area to another taking in the entire space. Using color as a focal point can be very effective. However it can be tricky, too much color and the room can be overwhelming and too little and it gets lost. Where is that perfect balance?
Every room needs a focal point, something that draws your attention and paint can be a very effective medium to do this. Focal points create interest and when you build the rest of the room around it you have a very pleasing space.
Paint is an easy way to create a focal point. I have used an inexpensive method called color blocking. Color blocking is very simple. You apply a block any size or shape of an accent color to the wall. I had a set of three pictures I loved and wanted to put them on a very large wall in my living room. The pictures were too small and alone would have looked out of place, but when I put a large block of accent color and then placed them inside the block of color they looked wonderful. I pulled the accent color out of the pictures themselves, this made a cohesive look. This was one quick and easy way to create an accent wall.
When looking for focal points look for architectural items in your home. Archways, recessed walls, bay windows or moldings. Use paint to make them stand out and become a point of interest in your home. You can make them more interesting using a contrasting color.
Look for the largest piece of furniture, window or even a high ceiling, anything that can be accented with color to bring the eye to that location. Don’t stop there after you have found the area in your room that you want to accent, continue that color around the room. It can be in pictures, pillows, fabrics or rugs. This method will make the eye move around the room, and it will feel complete and connected.
Just a word of warning, do not overdo the accent wall unless you are able to balance it within the room. Example if you have a red room, which is already a very intense color and you decide you really love purple, and you want to paint it as an accent color. Pulling that off could be a challenge; the combination would be very overwhelming and intense. A better way might be to use a different hue or intensity of the red (something lighter or darker) in an accent wall, and put the purple color throughout the room in pictures, pillows or fabrics. This would give you the best of all worlds.
Color is amazing and learning how and where to use it will make your home look like a professional designed it. Step outside of your comfort zone and have fun.
Painting Tips For the Exterior
The biggest problem that faces most people with painting houses is peeling, moisture is the culprit. Whether it’s rain or just morning dew it’ll penetrate the paint causing it to first crack which in turn results in peeling. Paint peeling is often found at the boards edges.
Cracking is another problem with older houses, that had lots of paint jobs already. Cracking can’t be really fixed effectively. In places where you have serious cracking it is best to strip that area clean to the raw wood, sand and clean the raw wood off and then prime the wood.
Step one-scrape down the area that you want to paint. I suggest not to scrape only in one direction, but in a variety of different directions because if you scrape the one direction you might not be lifting the edge up that is still loose. So if you go in the opposite direction this should remove the loose edge. Visually inspect the scraped area for any more loose or loosening edges.
Step two-once you’re confident that the area has been completely scraped of loose paint you should sand the edges between the sanded paint and raw wood to feather out the remaining edge. Do not over sand the bare wood because this will create an indent.
Step three-choose a good high-quality exterior primer. If your house paint colors are a light color then you can stick with a white primer but if you have a medium to dark exterior color I would have the primer tinted to match as closely as possible the finish coat.
Step four-applying the primer can be done with either a brush or a roller. If the whole job has a very nice finish on it you might want to use a low pile mini roller to eliminate brush marks. If you do end up brushing the bare spots, don’t put it on so thick that it leaves heavy brush marks.
Step five-now that you have let the primer dry for the day you can put on the finish coat, again with the same method as before. To re-coat wait a few hours and apply again.
These are the very basic steps for a simple scrape and paint job. Later I will cover things like;house paint colors which will discuss ways of deciding on choosing house paint colors and then I will discuss a topic on house painting interior where I will cover everything from choosing colors and types of paints. you should consider on painting your house .
